The safety critical and/or high availability  applications are more and more frequently based on fault tolerant systems, or on systems that are able to continue to operate correctly even in the presence of failure of one or more components. This feature is obtained by means of special hardware architectures (for example, redundant architectures), or by the system  ability to diagnose the fault and to react by implementing, in an automatic way, corrective and/or alternative measures.
If the application is based on a electronic programmable platform software also must possess the feature of tolerance to failure.
